Devonport High School for Girls has been awarded Platinum Champion School status by the National Citizen Service (NCS). As such, DHSG is the only school in the south-west to achieve the highest award, in recognition of our commitment to the scheme.
The NCS aims to empower students with the skills to succeed in life by taking part in 2 weeks of residential adventure activities, followed by a week of focus on employability skills to plan and carry out 30 hours of a community action project. DHSG has worked closely with the Argyle Community Trust to offer Year 11 students the chance to complete the NCS award after their GCSE examinations. Fifty-two students from DHSG took part following several visits from Argyle Community Trust, while DHSG hosted an event for over 300 NCS applicants from schools across Devon in June.
The Platinum Award was presented by Todd Hanrahan from Plymouth Argyle Community Trust, which included interviews with Dr Parry and some of the summer’s NCS graduates. In addition to the Platinum Award and certificate, some books were donated to the library by Daunt Books for Travellers so that all students can benefit from the achievement.
Lots of the current Year 11 students have signed-up for the NCS in the summer of 2019, so we look forward to continuing to support them to “Feel Unstoppable Together” as they develop their employability skills alongside their academic studies.
